We got off the ship with passports on us and copies in our safe onboard. Always always have copies of your passports. We left the ship early for the long day ahead. The German countryside was beautiful. Somehow, riding a train to get there gave you a odd feeling as if pulling you into the past, making it alive, personal. When we arrived in Berlin, the railway ended. Me, in Berlin. Pinching myself. Where am I? Parts of the infamous wall, still stands and where it once stood in other places, is paint along the roads to show you where it stood. Check Point Charley is where the freedom was defined. There stands in the middle of the street, soliders you can pose with and also get stamps in your passport for that place. Smiling with the soliders, who are just there as a tourist trap, is a tension that is not spoken but felt. The Brandenburg Gate is the trademark of Berlin. The main entrance to the city, surrounded by the wall for thirty years, was known throughout the world as a symbol for the division of the city and for the division of the world into two powers.
